11 Years Old, Multiple Tests, Years of Suffering and an Elusive Treatment
At the age of 11, and after 6 years of suffering illness after illness, Vincent – a young man in Wamego, Kansas, had been tested and tested, but no one seemed to be able to pinpoint the cause of his extreme discomfort and frightening symptoms. Vincent suffered from ADHD, OCD, moderate Asperger’s Syndrome, severe sensory problems, rages, trouble swallowing and even lesions on his hands as the skin would crack and peel.
Vincent was diagnosed with PANS/PANDAS, thought to be an immune response that results in inflammation of the brain in children. In turn, children quickly begin to exhibit life-changing symptoms such as OCD, refusal to eat, anxiety, tics, changes in personality, decline in cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivities, and more. Streptococcus infection is often connected to the sudden onset of OCD and/or tics along with other clinical symptoms.
A number of doctors told Vincent and his parents that he had psoriasis and extreme eczema with deep lesions. His hands were in terrible shape for nine months, no creams or other topical treatment would ease the pain. Vincent was further diagnosed, this time with a disease called Coxsackie (named for the city in NY where it was first recognized) which causes painful blisters in the mouth and small tender lesions on the palms of hands and bottom of feet.
He and his family were desperate — they sought out many doctors, tried everything, even psychologists
One of the doctors treating Vincent for symptoms of PANS/PANDAS found out about Aperiomics. The doctor then took mouth swabs and other samples and sent them off for DNA analysis by Aperiomics. Aperiomics conducted “deep shotgun metagenomic sequencing of these samples.” Aperiomics is the only company that identifies every known pathogen (bacteria, virus, fungi or parasite) in a single test through in any type of biological sample.
Aperiomics analyzed a mountain of data from Vincent’s samples and reported back to his doctor that the young man had a high abundance of staphylococcus in his nose, indicating a MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infection. MRSA is caused by a type of bacteria that has become resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections.
Vincent was then treated for the staphylococcus bacteria that Aperiomics identified. Very quickly, the lesions on his hands healed and vanished, and his symptoms started to disappear.
Today, Vincent is well on his way to excellent health. His mother said, “We are very grateful to Aperiomics. They were able to identify the root causes of his illnesses and we reduced his symptoms by 95%! He’s no longer refusing food and his skin is back to normal.”
